Nowadays, dystopias have largely replaced utopias and visionary thinking, as Jussi Pullinen aptly pointed out in a recent piece in Finland’s leading newspaper Helsingin Sanomat. Developments in today’s world are justifiably worrying in many respects, but there is still a place for envisioning a better world. Without visions there are no goals, without goals there is no hope, and without hope there is no change. Envisioning a better future, therefore, is important in its own right.
We know that a crisis is always also an opportunity. Without models of a better future, we cannot seize the chance to change the world when such an opportunity arises—even through crisis. Positive changes in crucial areas, such as international cooperation or technological development, can transform the world in dramatic ways. This, however, requires that these issues are addressed together.
